Marjorie Perry is a recognized innovator, a role model for women in non-traditional fields, and an excellent example for future entrepreneurs. Under her leadership, Perry’s Newark-based MZM Companies, Inc., has been consistently cited for completing construction projects within budget and on time. By cultivating this reputation, her company has secured a number of general contracts, including landscaping for the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, excavation and concrete work for Delta Airlines at the Port Authority of NY/NJ, rough carpentry for Verizon and Continental Airlines, as well as complete room renovations for Marriott Courtyard/Residence Inn hotels. Another major contract was the Xanadu Project at the Meadowlands where she participated in the School of Construction and served as supplier diversity compliance consultant. Currently, at Meadowlands Sports Arena, MZM provides safety control services for all construction.
Perry developed her marketing skills working with three Fortune 500 Companies – 3M, United Airlines, and Johnson & Johnson. A native of Newark, she started her own public relations firm locally in 1985 and joined MZM in operations. When the firm’s founders decided to leave the company in 1992, Perry bought them out, hired her own team, and negotiated new contracts for her firm. Since restructuring the company, revenues have topped millions annually during Perry’s 18-year tenure.
Perry has recently directed her efforts into continuing to expand the firm’s client listing as she forays into full service construction management and bio-solid waste transportation. Under MZM Waste Transportation division, several of the firm’s new opportunities have resulted from the dynamic pursuit and completion of jobs with key clients including New York Environmental Protection Agency and Clean Earth.
With key relationships, company history, and access to industry leaders, Perry has successfully developed an implementation plan and strategy that brings MZM full circle from professional construction management and transportation services to being tapped as a resource for running a successful business and for motivational appearances.
Perry’s success in reorganizing and growing MZM has led to increased opportunities for her to share her business strategies and motivate others. Perry is helping emerging construction companies and small businesses gain knowledge in their fields and obtain contracts.
As a noted orator, she has been invited to speak at the Governor’s conference for three consecutive years. In addition to speaking at conferences, Perry has also been a guest on a number of television shows and shares her wisdom as a trustee on several boards related to advancing business, education, racial, and gender interests.
